EAN & UPC barcode checker

Paste one or more codes. We check the length, the check digit and the GS1 prefix.

This tool only checks the format and check digit. To see which company a code is registered to at GS1, use Verified by GS1.

What does this tool check?

  • Length: 8 (EAN-8), 12 (UPC-A), 13 (EAN-13) or 14 digits (GTIN-14).
  • Check digit: the last digit must match the rest of the code.
  • GS1 prefix: the first digits show which GS1 organisation issued the code, and whether it is a special range such as in-store codes (20-29) or books (978-979).

The prefix is not the country of origin

A code starting with 50 was issued through GS1 UK. That says nothing about where the product was made. A product made in China can have a UK prefix and vice versa.

Want to see who a code is registered to?

Use Verified by GS1, GS1's own lookup service. It shows the company that received the number range from GS1.

FAQ

What does a prefix from 20 to 29 mean?

That range is meant for in-store use, for example products sold by weight. Marketplaces and Google Shopping refuse these codes.

My UPC has 12 digits. Is it valid in Europe?

Yes. A UPC-A with a 0 in front is a valid EAN-13. Use the UPC to EAN tool to convert it.

Do you store my codes?

No. The check runs in your browser. Nothing is sent to our server.
